Prevention of Struggle

How can we treat it?

When someone gets diagnosed with HIV it isn’t the end of the world.  In this

day and age we have developed ways to combat the virus instead of waiting for

precious lives to end. We have anti-retroviral medicines that give the human

population a second chance.

We present four different types of anti-retroviral medicines which all combat

the HIV virus in various ways.

The HIV virus needs a healthy cell in order to proceed with its process of

replication. With this knowledge, the protease is designed to interrupt that process.

When HIV enters the body, its goal is to infect the hosts’ healthy cells so that it may

replicate itself. Protease inhibitors take the place of the healthy cells that are being

targeted by the HIV virus.

Reverse transcriptase is designed to be the master of disguise. It’s made to

fool the HIV virus into believing that the reverse transcriptase is the cell that it’s

looking for and infects that cell instead. This helps prevent more healthy cells fro

getting infected.

Consider that HIV has already infected a cell, there’s a medicine that’s been

created in response to this issue, retroviral intergrase. When the HIV virus already

infects a cell, this enzyme allows for its genetic material to me integrated into the

DNA of the infected cell. Although there are no perfect cures, this anti-retroviral

medicine is closed to it. When the genetic material is integrated into the infected

cell, in a way it acts as if the cell were never infected in the first place.

Retroviruses are without a doubt, bad. When a patient is unresponsive or

their body rejects the previous three anti-retroviral medicines, there is a final

option. They can receive the chemokine receptor, or CCR5. Essentially when all else

fails this medicine decelerates the progression of HIV to AIDS.

The theme of balance fits perfectly within this project. What we’re aiming for

is a balance in human lives. Ones life simply cannot be balanced when a dangerous

virus could potentially take said ones life. These medicines help provide that

balance to our population.

Data on this matter can be taken from doctors who’ve treated HIV infected

patients. Statistics can be taken based off of the effectiveness of each kind of the

anti-retroviral medicines. If it is seen and there is proof that these medicines are

effective then the minds of the people are sure to be swayed.
